Performance

The stage – as a space that conveys a multiplicity of realities – is one of the arenas for exploring the idea of Coexistence that guides the INDEX 2024 programme.

During the two weekends of the Biennial, the gnration blackbox and the two auditoriums of the Theatro Circo will host several performances of different sizes and formats. One thing they all have in common is that they are national premieres.

Ryoji Ikeda, a globally renowned artist, returns to Braga to open INDEX 2024 with a live audiovisual set (an increasingly rare event) based on his latest album, ultratronics. Lawrence Abu Hamdan, who recently won the Turner Prize, presents Air Pressure, a lecture-performance about the violation of Lebanese airspace by the Israeli Air Force, premiered last year at MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The duo SYNSPECIES – Elías Merino and Tadej Droljc – explores the idea of “other than human” with the audiovisual performance ASBU, which concludes the first part of the performance programme.

The second weekend of INDEX has something different in store for the audiences. The idea of AI folklore is the central theme of the performance piece co-created by the producer Evita Manji and the duo dmstfctn, which has just premiered at the Serpentine Gallery in London. Kode9 also returns to Braga to present Escapology, a sci-fi audiovisual project that encourages us to speculate on alternative realities.

The programme also welcomes the encounter between the Electronic Devices Orchestra, which includes musicians and non-musicians from Braga, and students from the Berklee College of Music in Valencia, who will come together in a collective creative process with delightfully unpredictable results. We look forward to seeing you in the audience.
