Raven Chacon (b. 1977, United States) is a composer and artist creating musical experiences that explore relationships among land, space, and people. In an experimental practice that cuts across the boundaries of visual art, performance, and music, Chacon breaks open musical traditions and activates spaces of performance where the histories of the lands the United States has encroached upon can be contemplated, questioned, and reimagined.

“Storm Pattern” is a multi-channel textile and sound installation composed of field recordings of drones at the Standing Rock camp—a nationwide protest movement against the occupation of Indigenous territory that took place between 2016 and 2017. At the time of recording, the drones were flying at an average speed and emitting a sound of A440, a universal reference used to tune musical instruments. The installation’s soundtrack reflects the intertwined sounds of surveillance and counter-surveillance.
