French professor and philosopher Yves Citton has dedicated his career to studying how the media shape our reality. According to him, in today’s societies, we live in a “mediarchy,” where our ability to perceive and act upon reality is mediated by a technological dimension that shapes what we feel, think, express, and do. In this sense, he introduces the idea of the media as reconfigurers of the temporality in which we live and as a central element in the definition of power relations. At INDEX, Citton will present a talk on his current line of research, drawing connections between power and technology, and will engage in a conversation with curator and researcher Liliana Coutinho.
Yves Citton
Yves Citton is a professor of Literature and Media at the University of Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint Denis, a member of the Institut Universitaire de France, and co-editor of the journal Multitudes. He has published “A máquina de fazer ganhar as direitas” (Almedina, 2026), “Mythocracy: How Stories Shape Our Worlds” (Verso, 2025), “Politics of Curiosity: Alternatives to the Attention Economy” (co-edited with Enrico Campo, Routledge, 2024), “Altermodernités des Lumières” (Seuil, 2022), “Mediarchy” (Polity Press, 2019), and “The Ecology of Attention” (Polity Press, 2016).
Liliana Coutinho
Liliana Coutinho is a curator and researcher, as well as a conference programmer at Culturgest, where, among numerous programs, she curated the lecture series “Artificial Intelligence: Applications, Implications, and Speculations” (2019). She was a curator at INDEX 2022, INDEX 2024, and, alongside Claire Shea, Jesse James, and Fátima Bintou Sy, at the first Walk&Talk Art Biennial. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophical Aesthetics and Art Sciences from the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and is a researcher at IHC – NOVA FCSH/IN2PAST and a visiting professor in the graduate program in Art Curation at FCSH/UNL.
