Frédéric Neyrat + Teresa Castro
Ecologies of coexistence
Free admission
Session in english
Moderation: Liliana Coutinho
How do we mobilise our imagination to allow for different experiences? How can we regenerate the place of the outside, from which to act, on the one hand, and nourish the affection and attention that unite us, on the other? How can we imagine politics, a way of humans and other living beings living together that isn’t the habitual continuation of conflict by other means? One that is not fuelled by the imagination of the catastrophe, nor by the autonomisation that transcends machines and pervades our everyday lives.
A conversation with Frédéric Neyrat, a philosopher working in the fields of environmental humanities, contemporary theory, and media culture, and Teresa Castro, an art historian that explores the relationships between cinema, animism and ecocriticism.
Frédéric Neyrat
Professor in the English Department at UW-Madison (USA), Frédéric Neyrat is a French philosopher with an expertise in environmental humanities, contemporary theory, and media culture. He is co-editor of the electronic platform Alienocene, which charts the burgeoning field of Planetary humanities. His books and articles offer a “new existentialism”, regenerating the place of the outside that contemporary theory underestimates.
Teresa Castro
Teresa Castro is a professor of Film Studies at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University (Paris, France) and a researcher at the Centre Alexandre Koyré. Much of her current research focuses on the links between cinema and animism, plant life forms in visual culture, and the environmental history of photography and cinema. In 2023, as part of the Terra Batida network residency programme, she created the performance-conference Conspirações.
The Conferences Programme of Biennial INDEX is supported by the European Digital Deal project.
This talk is supported by IF Export 2024 from the Institut Français, Paris, and the Mais França program from the Institut Français of Portugal.
