In the performance “The Drum and the Bird,” to be presented on May 7th at INDEX, the Forensis collective and musician Bill Kouligas draw on research into the German genocide in Namibia, carried out between 1904 and 1908, to create an immersive, multisensory performance piece. Using technologies such as 3D techniques and gaming engines, this performance reimagines the little-studied history of this German colonial intervention. Drawing on their experience in developing this project, Celina Abba and Mushiva, members of the Forensis collective, will speak with curator and researcher Alexandra Balona.
Celina Abba
Spatial researcher Celina Abba works at the intersection of ecology, territory, and human and non-human rights. With a background in architecture and biology, she holds a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her work examines how racial and environmental violence is embedded in territory and its infrastructure. She is part of the Forensis / Forensic Architecture projects, contributing to investigations into German colonial genocide in Namibia, the arrest of migrants in Libya, and state violence in Turkey.
Mushiva
Mushiva is a researcher at Forensic Architecture. He is a Namibian technologist, street poet, filmmaker, and multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin. His creative practice, titled “The Institute of Decolonial Technology,” focuses on creating music, games, 3D cinematic worlds, and “wearable” AI devices that seek to subvert the colonial legacies of current technologies. He holds a Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction from the University of Trento (Italy).
Alexandra Balona
Alexandra Balona is an independent curator, researcher, and lecturer based in Porto. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Studies (UCP, 2023) and a B.A. in Architecture (FAUP, 2001). She is an Assistant Professor at the UCP School of Arts, and a researcher at CITAR-EA-UCP. She is a founding member of Rampa (Porto), where she has been part of the board since 2023. She has curated several projects: Fluid Prospections, Performance program for Contemporânea (2025); Anton Vidokle: Citizens of the Cosmos (2021), among others. She is the author of Troubling the Stage. The Choreographic Work of Marlene Monteiro Freitas (Lenz Press, 2025).
