Shuang Li (b. 1990, China) works across various artistic genres—performance, interactive websites, sculpture, and moving images. “ÆTHER (Poor Objects)” (2021) by Shuang Li reflects on the entanglement of physical and digital realities through a layered video collage. The work considers how subjectivity is formed within an immersive and continuous online environment. Disparate imagery, from extraterrestrial simulations and swarming birds to dystopian avatars and abandoned spaces, is interwoven with the myth of Nuwa, who repairs the sky with her own body. This reference introduces a logic of fragmentation and repair that runs throughout the work. Two female vloggers appear as unstable points of identification, their bodies shifting between presence and projection. The recurring image of a solar eclipse, intensified by the artificial glow of a ring light, brings together cosmic and technological forms of visibility, pointing to the operations of power embedded in regimes of exposure and self-display.
