Stine Deja (b. 1986, Denmark) explores the effects of technological development on human psychology, living conditions, and behavioral patterns. In “GRAVE MATTERS”, the artist offers an existential reflection on grief that is both unsettling and alluring. She invites the viewer to contemplate the threshold between life and death, between biology and technology.

The focus is on the phenomenon of griefbots, a new technology that allows the bereaved to communicate with a digital version of their loved one through artificial intelligence. One does not enter a church, but a simulated temple, where the chirping of birds, organ music, and other customary signs of worship create a Zen-like atmosphere, reminiscent of a wellness retreat.

The viewer is invited to open the coffins, encountering stoic yet smiling faces, with eyes that seem to convey humanity. These griefbots appear trapped in a loop where eternal life is merely simulated, and they can be turned off at any moment. In this unsettling experience, the artist invites visitors to consider: can the eternal exist in a future scenario like this?

Stine Deja

Combining extensive conceptual research with a surreal aesthetic and a sense of humor, Stine Deja offers in her work an absurd and critical perspective on the future of human culture. In each case, she infuses narratives of progress and opportunity with a sense of stagnation, boredom, and a strange self-awareness. The artist’s works are included in the collections of the Arken Museum of Modern Art, the Esbjerg Art Museum, and the New Carlsberg Foundation.
