Florian Hecker
Syn as Tex Scene
Traversing performance, installation, and publications, Florian Hecker works with synthetic sound, the listening process and the audience’s auditory experience. The computer-generated sound piece Syn As Tex Scene(2022) inhabits gnration’s gallery spaces through a suspended architecture consisting of loudspeakers, cables and sound-absorbing panels. A chapter of Hecker’s ongoing investigation with input/output systems and the analysis and subsequent resynthesis of sound, Syn As Tex Scene dramatizes sonic material produced using a novel algorithm for texture synthesis, developed by Axel Roebel and members of the Analysis/Synthesis team at IRCAM, Paris. The scientific analysis of sound and the quantification of auditory sensation dates back to the beginnings of psychophysics in the late nineteenth century and has developed continually ever since. Syn As Tex Scene responds to this history while addressing questions concerning machine listening, the semantic reconstruction of perceptual objects, and the unrepresentable, inviting for a listening scenario commenting scale, endurance and sonic subtleties.
